In many respects, Alex Mussomeli is a typical 10-year-old boy. He enjoys art, music, sports, cooking and video games. But what really impresses people who meet Alex is how thoroughly he understands the technology that helps him hear and how matter-of-factly he shares this information with others.

When fourth-grade teacher asked her students to write on a topic they know a lot about, Alex Mussomeli chose hearing loss and his hearing devices. Alex wears a hearing aid and a cochlear implant. In his essay, he explained:

“The reason people might need to get a cochlear implant is that they might not hear. They could be deaf or have hearing loss. The surgery of getting an implant can be a big decision.”

In fact, Alex’s essay found its way into the websites of Hearing Health Foundation (www.hearinghealthfoundation.org) and SPEECH4HEARING (www.speech4hearing.com).

“Hearing makes me happy!” concludes Alex. “I am grateful that my parents got me a hearing aid and a cochlear implant.”
